I just walked past the hallway where we first kissed…

But she always deleted the messages before sending them. Which was stupid, because she knew he was waiting for her to make the first move. He was holding back because she’d poured her heart out to him that night, then cried after they’d made love, and in general he knew she was a hot mess.

She should just leap, she knew that. The fact he was holding back, that he was that much of a good guy…those were reasons to go for it.

But knowing that in her head and being ready for it in her heart were two different things.

Trust was a fickle mistress.

She couldn’t bring herself to accept how needy she was for him. How happy he made her, and how gutted she was when he was gone. Her airline had recently installed wi-fi on most of their planes, so provided that was working, she was never out of touch.

When Nathan was working, he was gone. Poof.

And dating him would mean being okay with that. Trusting that he was going to come back to her. Trusting that in the pockets of time they’d have together, they’d be able to foster a meaningful connection that wouldn’t turn ugly or bitter or sad.

She was so done with sad.

One night with him had changed her, but just a bit. Not enough to make her brave.

No, she was still fragile. Still weak.

So she didn’t flirt with him, because she wasn’t ready to deal with the consequences. Instead, she told him about the books she was reading and funny stories about passengers on her flights. She got him to send her more clips of him playing the guitar, which amazed her, and wiggled little nuggets of gold out of him, like the fact that his favorite food was beef stroganoff and his idea of a perfect lazy Sunday was a Die Hard marathon.

For his part, he gave more than he asked for. She could hear him, between the lines, wondering about her house and her life post-divorce, as he asked her about to-do lists and her moods in that non-prying, just genuinely interested way of his. She’d danced around both subjects because the answers weren’t fun.

Being un-fun was right up there with being sad.

She knew she could confide in him.

A big part of her wanted to.

But an even bigger parted wanted just to be happy. Full stop.

It took four months, but during a crew briefing at the end of April, she finally got a clue that the universe had been listening.

She had an early flight, which meant getting to O’Hare at four in the morning. She took the El, because it was cheaper than parking. And since being late wasn’t an option, she was twenty minutes early—enough time to grab a coffee and check her email in the staff lounge. She was about to check her schedule on the airline’s intranet when her friend Gina sat down next to her.

“Have you picked your flights for next month yet?” Gina pulled out a compact and checked her makeup as she talked.
